Auxiliary and Baers                                                                          A sound mind in a sound body

Women's Auxiliary and Baers:  the heart of Eiche Turners

Women's Auxiliary

"Celebrating 100 years of service to Turnverein Eiche."

At first, even though the entire family was incorporated into the life of the Turnverein, women had no direct voice in the operation of the Society.  In 1905, to contribute in more ways, Eiche Turner's Women's Auxiliary came into being.  Over the years the Auxiliary has contributed to the welfare of the Society in many ways, running certain events, operating the Club kitchen, raising money for specific Turner purposes, and contributing directly to the Society coffers.  In 1960, women were allowed membership in the Society, and have contributed as members and officers ever since, but the Auxiliary has continued to be an important asset to Turnverein Eiche.

The Auxiliary meets several months throughout the year on the first Wednesday of that month at 11:30  AM for luncheon meetings, 7:30 PM for evening meetings (which include coffee and desert) and occasionally at 6:00 PM for dinner meetings - check the Calendar to determine whether there is a meeting that month, and then what time it starts.  Meetings occasionally include a business
meeting but always finish with a cultural program and/or social gathering.

The Auxiliary holds a number of events for the Society and open to the public through the year, including Pot Luck Dinners, Breakfast with Santa, the Ten Penny Social, they participate in the Eiche Picnic, collect and contribute gifts for the children in our classes, as well as preparing the food for the Super Bowl Soiree and many Turner functions throughout the year.

The Auxiliary has raised and donated over $10,000 to the Society.  Other donations include a coat and trophy case in the foyer, new refrigerator for the kitchen, a lighted podium, Halle entrance doors, banquet tables, table skirts, changing tables in the bathrooms, new American Flags, the new bar stools in the Jahn Room, new stair treads, and many items for our kitchen.

Through the year, the Auxiliary supports many community organizations with monetary donation as well as making collections of food items and clothing to the Tinley Park Food Pantry.

It is the auxiliary's desire to continue our support of Turnverein Eiche in the years to come. If you would like to be part of this worthwhile and gratifying volunteer organization, please contact the Eiche Turner office at 708-429-2206 for an application.  Dues are $10.00 per year.

Eiche  Baers

The Baers are an auxiliary group of Eiche that is open to all male members over the age of 30.  Initially, young men in the organization were all members of the gym class and expected to compete in various athletic events.  Until age 18 they were considered "Juniors", and competed in that category; after reaching 18 they became Actives", and competed as adults.  As they grew older (and slower), they became "Baers" so they could compete against men of their own age and abilities.  Today, Eiche's Baers still maintain the fellowship of friendly competition with each other and other Turnvereins.

The Baers meet on the 3rd Monday of every month, arriving at the Halle by 6:00 PM, after either playing golf or bowling, depending on the weather, with several members taking their turns preparing dinner for the returning sportsmen.

The Eiche Baers contribute to the Society in a variety of ways:  raising money or contributing directly as needed;  hosting events for the Society; organizing work groups to handle many of the chores and maintenance needed around the Halle, and raising funds for the Society and contributing directly to the Society Treasury.

Over the year, the Baers sponsor a number of special events and social gatherings (see the Calendar).

Each Turnverein, across the country, has a Baers organization.  The Illinois District Baers maintains the Baren Hohle at the Illinois Turner Camp in Algonquin, and contribute in many ways to the welfare of Turner Camp.
